Old Asphalt Shingles
Eventually, all roofing wears out
It's normal for old asphalt shingles to loose their protective gravel cover. Once the gravel is gone there is nothing to protect the asphalt coated layer underneath (the waterproof part) and breakdown is rapid. This roof should have been replaced years earlier.
