Compressed Plumbing Couplings

Floor Heave

Some clues to expansive soil problems are subtle
These two pipes are in the same house on opposite sides of the basement. The flexible couplings are placed in the plumbing waste lines to allow for some floor movement (kind of like a shock absorber). The floor in the right-hand picture has heaved up, and the coupling has taken up the slack to avoid damaging the pipes above the floor. Now it should be repaired to restore some slack and allow for additional movements.
